Stage 1 To 5 of Wound Care
Wound care is not a technical medical procedure, but it can easily get complicated without proper long-term care. For most cases, wound repair occurs in five stages. In all these stages, the management differs slightly. A slight mistake may cause permanent scar, or even sepsis. But you don’t need to worry. Dr. Azinge’s years of experience will make your wound care journey an easy one.
- Stage 1 or Coagulation Stage – in this stage the wound is red and might bleed. The body attempts to stop bleeding by making a clot to seal the wound. The wound is susceptible to infections at this stage, so proper cleaning is crucial.
- Stage 2 or Inflammatory Stage – in this stage the wound is filled with neutrophils and macrophages. These cells clear the debris and kill any bacteria in the wound site. In some cases, suturing is imperative for the induction of the inflammatory stage.
- Stage 3 or Epithelization – the epithelial cells start to grow again. The wound is covered with a thin pink layer. This stage is vulnerable to abrasion or reinjury.
- Stage 4 or Fibroplasia – this stage is characterized by growth of the underlying tissue, like collagen and muscle fibers.
- Stage 5 or Maturation – maturation is a prolonged process that occurs over months to years after wound infliction. The wound matures and its tensile strength increases. For example, the type III collagen is replaced by type I collagen, which has more tensile strength.
The stages of wound healing are interdependent. If one stage isn’t fully completed, the wound can become infected, disfigured, or cause systematic disease. Dr. Azinge thoroughly inspects each wound and defines the stage. The stage-appropriate wound care treatment is then begun to ensure a smooth and uneventful recovery.
